What happens when the Chinese leave?

Presently everyone is happy with the Chinese constructing the best motorway in East and Central Africa, that is good. But have we taken time to think of the future? As with every engineering structure, the highway will require periodic maintenance to keep it in the best working condition, who will do this?

There is need to worry even if we can pay for the chinese to come back and maintain it after the warranty period is over, but for how long? For how long will we be calling chinese to come and fix this and that while we have our own engineers?

Oops! did I say our engineers? Sad to say, our engineers and not "qualified enough". They are apparently "half backed" - This is according to ERBK (Engineers Registration Board of Kenya). In reference to an article published in today's Daily Nation, The Spring Board, ERBK and Universities and in a standoff that is having a negative impact on the very Economy. Worse hit is the university student who has to endure 5years in grad school, then be told he cant secure a licence to pracise the skill commercially. - No wonder structures will keep on falling.

If this standoff continues the Chinese will take all the contracts in the country while our engineers just sit back and watch. It will be a pity if indeed we achieve the Vision 2030 which will be in fact, a Vision 2030 MADE IN CHINA.

According to the article, China makes 600,00 Engineers in 100 disciplines per year while we produce 600 in 10 disciplines. O (zero,null) competition. Thats why you will never hear a KAMAU CHENG WA CONSTRUCTION COMPANY or OTIENO LI ENGINEERING COMPANY. The Chinese companies make it to the list of best contracting companies in the world. There is no room for competition whatsoever.

Both parties, ERBK and Universities should solve this issue ammicably and ASAP for the better of the student. We need people who meet international standards so as to maintain the Thika Road motorway.

We are very sad that this is happening, 19years to Vision 2030, but well...this is Kenya and its our country, so lets work for the good.

Ojijo Overpass - Worst Case Scenerio

Location: Former Ojijo Roundabout

After receiving several complaints and emails about the Ojijo Overpass 'Blind Spot' I decided to go on site to substantiate the claims. Shock on me, drivers are exiting this intersection cautiously because of inability to see the oncoming vehicles. The main problem here is the state of uncertainty that a driver has to go through when exiting or during the entrance into this intersection. There is a blind spot, such that he/she cannot see the oncoming vehicles in good time.

Kahawa Sukari Overpass (Lot2)

Sinohydro (Lot 2) has cleverly solved the occurrence of such a problem at the Kahawa Sukari Overpass by diverting the oncoming vehicles from the wall so as to be seen by vehicles exiting the underpass below.

The contractor for Lot 1 - China Wu Yi has enough signs on every road that leads here to reduce the chances of an accidents but not until this is rectified, lets approach this junction cautiously.

Here at the exit of Ojijo intersection, a vehicle peeps out into the road at a rather dangereous point because the driver has limited visibility of oncoming traffic.Many drivers are complaining of this situation.


With no STOP signs or traffic lights, the area is slowly becoming a black spot. Drivers are urged to excersise caution as they drive in this section.

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY:Despite the fact that the contractor has constructed peds footpath, vehicle-peds interaction on the motorway can be seen and this is not pleasing.

Highway Speed Cameras - Special Feature

Introduction
Many of our motorways here in Kenya are monitored by the eye of the traffic policemen, either on foot or on patrol. The naughty matatus know better the consequences of breaking a traffic offense with the eye of a policeman watching them. This system has been used since time immemorial but with the coming of modern expressways it would be disastrous to try and stop a vehicle in an 8-Lane High Speed section. The solution for this would be to install a set of cameras watching day and night for traffic offenders. These devices would be mounted in a hidden point of on camera vans along the roads. Welcome to the concept of highway speed cameras.

What are speed cameras?
A speed camera, road safety camera, road rule camera, photo radar, photo enforcement, speed camera, traffic enforcement camera, is a camera mounted to monitor traffic movements on the motorway. They are equipped with sophisticated cameras that can read the vehicle reg. number incase of a highway code violation.

The cameras have the ability to detect the instantaneous speed of a vehicle passing by after which a call is made to waiting police patrol behicles. The fines imposed are noirmally high to discourage such driving.
Modern cameras also compare the number of the vehicle and compare it with the ones allowed on that lane.

Types of Cameras:

Bus lane enforcement - Means to deter any vehicle from accessing lanes meant for buses and coaches only.
Red light enforcement - Detect those drivers who refuse to stop at at RED light.
Speed limit enforcement - Detect an over-speeding vehicle on a road that has a speed limit.
Stop sign enforcement
Number plate recognition systems.

The implementation of such devices on roads has brought about public hate on the same. Many perceive that they are simply money making points. The result is vandalism of the cameras on locations that can be accessed.
Major disadvantage includes:

Unpopularity
Revenue not safety

In manyc ountries implementing this type of technology, it is mandatory that they put up signs that the area is under surveillance. This is to warn the driver that he/she is being monitored and should drive carefully. Also mobile cameras on vans are also required to put large signs for oncoming vehicles. A good example is in the UK where mobile cameras are mounted on patrol vans and the cans are carefully parked along side the road. This has sparked public outcry and many term this as "Greed Cameras".

Location: Former Muthaiga Roundabout.

Muthaiga Roundabout as we once knew is currently full of hills of soil. This section will be the meeting point of Thika Road (A2) and Kiambu Road (C64/C65) and Muthaiga Road. This section is being done by Motorways Construction Ltd who are by the way KENYAN CONTRACTORS. This is impressive. I was quite worried about China Wu Yi giving them this section but they have proved they can handle such a big project. Good work MC.

Survey Overpass

Project Lot: Lot 2

Contractor: SinoHydro Corp.

Location:Former Survey Footbridge.

Located just next to KCA University before the Allsops Underpass, the Survey Overpass is just a few months to completion. Currently the contractor is laying the concrete layer. Main function was to limit the distraction of vehicles from KCA and Survey of Kenya with those on Thika. This overpass lies within the 8-Lane High speed section which starts from Muthaiga to Kenyatta University.

The structure is 6-lane [3 for each direction] with adjacent service roads for buses and vehicles. As with similar structures the inner-most lanes are reserved for vehicles intending to use the underpass at Allsops all the way to Ruaraka. Speed for this lanes will strictly be 110kph up from the regular 80kph by law once enacted. Any driving below this speed shall inconvenience other motorists and attract a fine.

The question now rises, how will the students and pedestrians of both institutions be able to cross amid such high traffic movements?

This cumulative updates comes as a result of the rapid development of all the contractors in a bid to beat the February 2011 deadline. The speed of construction has been speed-ed 3 fold.

This post will cover all 3 Lots.

GLOBE CINEMA COMPLEX: The shoulders for the fly-overs are almost done. Work on drainage is on-going together with the on and off-ramp.

FOREST ROAD-A2 INTERCHANGE: Much of the service roads and Limuru Road at this interchange are done. Forest Rd and Road A2 concrete is laid together with the ramps.

PANGANI 3L INTERCHANGE: MMC, the Contractor, is working on the tunnels for Forest Road and Thika Road. The fly-over is going well as planned. Traffic is a mess in this section.

WITEITHIE: This is a true show of how far Sheng-Li can go to make a road. The huge rock wall on the left was originally at the road(right). The contractor has since 'moved' to create way for the road.

The Motorists Association of Kenya, released this book afew weeks ago but it wasn't available until last week. After little searching I managed to get my copy yesterday.In fact was on my way to Thika so what better opportunity to read it than in the matatu ?

I must applaud MAK for such an initiative to guide our very exited motorists on how to use this new expressway.The stunts we see on this motorway have to stop, like you cannot reverse in 4-lane expressway. Kudos.

Cover Design
The cover design is very attractive given the illustration of a huge interchange. The placement of images randomly on the cover though messes-up all the glory. Would look nice if the small images are not there. Cover is soft and smooth that means you can fold it at any angle to fit in the pocket(for ref.) Waterproof paper quality. The back cover is equaly good thiugh the font used suggets a childrens book. Times New Roman would have done some justice. Why is the name of the author concealed? A Gratitude statement at the bottom to the Ministry of Roads to me was ....

The book covers the following topics:

Lane Choice
Unique Situtations of Express Lanes
Safety Belts Save Lives
What are good and bad driving habits
Attend to Emergencies Correctly

The above topics have been explained and brought out in clear grammar with pictures alongside. I was much attracted to the one on Hydroplanning and Velocitation. The author has explained the topics for the reader to understand regardless of class in society and education level. The book points out on how to enter and exit expressways without causing a snarl-up and emphasizes on following traffic signs. As a matter of fact the author has also included some drawings on how to maneuver. An article on brake failure and how to attend to emergencies could be a worth read for drivers. The book has not omitted the age old laws of the road: Don't Drink and Drive, Wear your seat belt snugly.

Recommendations
In the next publication or edition we would prefer if:

Drawing from the contractors were included.
Highway Tolls was given some weight interms of explanation.
Buy licensed images instead of using overstretched and watermarked images
More statistics
Professional placing of images.

Pangani 3L Interchange

Location:Former Pangani Roundabout

Often referred to as "an engineers nightmare" the Pangani 3L (3 Level) interchange will be something never seen before on Kenyan soil. The contractor is on a mission to rewrite the Kenyan Highway Rulebook.

The Pangani Interchange consists of roads criss-crossing each other in 3Levels (Above Ground, Ground Level and Under Ground). Initially this roundabout was a headache during prime time (rush-hours) since it is a major connection point for major roads. The temporary roundabout is being served by the following roads.

Forest Road- Road A2
Thika Road
Murang'a Road
Ring Road Ngara

All the above motorways will be high density come the completion of the highway. A suitable interchange that will ensure smpooth and non-stop system is surrently under construction. This will involve a road tunnel at some point and fly-overs. This is how its going to be:

Vehicles from Forest Road (Road A2) to Thika Road will keep left, avoid the overpass and proceed straight to Thika Road (Ground Level)
Vehicles from Forest Road (Road A2) to Ring-Road Ngara will keep right (still on left--This is Kenya) gently climb the climbing ramp will turns to Ring-Road direction. Proceed to Ring-Road.
Vehicles from Thika Road to Murang'a Road (City Centre) will keep right at the exit from Muthaiga Underpass approach the tunnel with caution, enter the tunnel (move left side) and exit at Murang'a Road from the tunnel.
Vehicles from Thika Road to Ring Road Ngara will keep center lane at the exit from Muthaiga Underpass, using the escarpments rise till the turn left to Ring Road Ngara.
Vehicles from Thika Road to Forest Road (Road A2) will use the tunnel which will end up in Forest Road.[This is the same tunnel for going to Murang'a Rd from Thika Road.The tunnel will have two exists:Muranga Rd and Forest Rd].
Vehicles from Murang'a Road to Thika Road will not use the tunnel but the escarpments, proceed to the interchange, join the traffic from Forest Road and proceed to Thika Road.

Highway Toll Systems -Thika Road

Introduction
Modern highway and infrastructure projects are normally very costly and require heavy financing for smooth operation. This is primarily due to the high cost of materials and man-power. Despite this costs, donors are always willing to step-in for the long term gain. The Nairobi-Thika Highway Improvement Project is no exception. 32Billion (approx.) will have been pumped in come the completion in February 2012.

The operation and maintenance (O&M) costs for this project are also not small given the size of the project itself. Where will these funds come from?

This is where the concept of Highway Toll Systems comes in. Modern highways like the U K's M6 have well developed toll systems that ensures every centimeter traveled is payed for. The tolls or charges vary depending on the vehicle and are relatively high, just enough for proper road maintenance.

The Concept
A toll is a tax, levy or a fee paid for privilege of passing over a highway or bridge. Some may define it as a charge for transportation.

A toll road or highway is a publicly built road in which a driver pays a special fee-toll for use. To collect this fee, a special structure erected on the highway path called a toll booth, toll plaza, toll station, or toll gate is used and can be manned or automatic. These structures can be on the highway path or on the side-served by side roads which eventually lead back to the main highway. In most highway they may be found at the beginning or end of the highway. Currently there exists one toll booth i.e Weigh Bridge on Thika Road for weighing trucks and other heavy vehicles. As said earlier this example is served by a side road which eventually lead back to the main highway. The location of these toll booths will much depend on the managing company where it is deemed effective for mass vehicle movement.

The funds collected at the toll booths are used in road maintenance and operation. For very costly projects like Thika Road (32Billion), the funds may be used to offset this loan as time goes by. This increases public participation other than increasing taxes in the already overtaxed public resources.

Types of Tolls

Motorway and other Infrastructure Tolling - This is the most famous where a vehicle is charged upon passing a toll station in a motorway. (Thika Road Project)
Distance or Area Charging - Vehicles are charged per total distance driven in a defined area. Less common.
Time Based Charges - A vehicle or road user has to pay for a given period of time in which he may use the associated infrastructure.

Management of Tolls
The management and operation of toll booths shall be under a company which will have the mandate of performing the necessary tasks of maintenance of the highway as per the Operation and Maintenance Manual thus ensuring smooth and uninterrupted traffic flow. The Operation and Maintenance Manual will be prepared by the contractor-entity with knowledge of the project.Such companies are for example the M6toll - M6 Highway (Midland Expressway Ltd (MEL)).
The maintenance tasks shall include and not limited to:

Maintenance of pavement, shoulders, overpasses/underpasses, bridges highway furniture etc
Co-ordinate Routine, Periodic and Corrective Maintenance procedures
Operation of toll booth/plazas.
Patrolling Systems e.g Cameras etc
Emergency and Medical Aid services.

Pricing
The pricing of the tolls much depend on the vehicle type, day, time, number of axles ,number of wheels and height of 1st axle.

Classification of Vehicles

Payement
Payement of tolls can be done on the road or off the road before the trip to the toll road. Mostly, payment at toll booths is often costlier than off the road payments which have a 10-15% Discounts. One thing to note is that the payement methods mentioned below are not all available at the toll booths. Traffic signs showing tollbooths will indicate which payment service is available. The following are the modes of payement:

Cash- Payements are paid at the toll booth in legal tenders (money). This method is very common though time wastage during the transaction.
Credit Card- Normal card transactions as done it retail supermarkets. The card is swiped and payement is made. Very quick.
Prepaid card-This method involves the use of a pre-paid card which has been loaded earlier with travel units which are then deducted when swiped at the toll booth.
Stickers-on-windscreen - In this method stickers indicating earlier payement are stuck on wind screen such that the booth attendant will not charge you.


A transponder in a car windshield

Transponders -A very common systems with HGV's (Trucks) , this method involves the purchasing an electronic device and mounting it on the windscreen inside the vehicle. The transponder is attached to an account which is pre-paid. When the vehicle approaches the toll gate, a receiver receives the signal from the transponder, decodes the message and automatically deducts the toll charge. However should the toll charge be more than is in the account, the driver will have to pay by another method. Should a vehicle without the transponder approach this toll gate, the plate number will be automatically photographed and read where the driver will receive a bill which will be much higher than the toll gate fee.

Legislation
A suitable legislation will have to be put in place to make it a criminal offense to refuse or fail to pay a toll. This varies in many countries.In the case of a vehicle driver not having enough money or failing to pay a toll, the legislation should give the company the power to charge more in such circumstances. A Toll Enforcement Authority will be mandated to manage cases of not paying tolls, this can also be handled by the traffic police.

Concepts worth understanding

Shun picking - The term shun piking comes from the word shun, meaning "to avoid", and pike, a term referring to turnpikes, which are roads that require payment of a toll to travel on them.People who often avoid toll roads sometimes call themselves shun pikers. Shun-piking has also come to mean an avoidance of major highways (regardless of tolls) in preference for bucolic and scenic interludes along lightly traveled country roads.
Closed Loop System - In a closed system the user enters the toll road and cannot leave it without paying a toll based on the distance traveled and the vehicle category. This system requires toll plazas to identify the points of entry and exit of the user and the distance traveled, the vehicle category and to collect the toll. This means that irrespective of point of entry into the highway you will have to pay at the exit. Distance traveled at the highway will be calculated and charge whichever exit you use.
Open Loop System - In an open toll system, tolls fees are levied at certain points on the expressway, either on the main carriageway or at interchanges. These flat toll fees do not necessarily reflect a consistent rate per kilometer since they may relate to different trip lengths (tariff distortions are inherent to most open systems).

Conclusion
When it comes to Thika Road some may argue that toll booths cannot be installed. The fact is yes they shall be there. As with toll roads an optional non toll path (the old Thika Road) will be provided which I cannot guarantee will be in the best of condition. The prices will much rely in the management of the highway who will decide. As for the cost of transportation - given the current economic state of the country, it will be affected directly (+vely of -vely) by the toll.

Allsops Underpass

The Allsops Underpass was opened last week with only one lane working and the other one with fresh tar poured. However with this came a few problems that we cannot overlook. Just before the bridge, a new bus stop has formed where matatus are causing a bottle-neck for traffic. The PSVs are stopping on the main motorway calling for passengers something that should be corrected.

The second lane to City center should be opened asap.

First Street Lamp on Thika Road

SinoHydro recently installed this lone street lamp pole at the helm of this overpass, something that looks...rare. My first thought this may be some sort of a test by the contractor since its the only one in the entire project. As you can see, the pole has no lamps just bare and well supported at the base. Looks temporary though since the bolts at the base have no molten steel on them to discourage illegal openings.(like the guard rails bolts)

This is just to show us that this time round, the February 2011 deadline will be met after all. Great work, SinoHydro.

Kenyatta Road Overpass

Contractor: Sheng Li Engineering Co. Ltd

Location: Thika Road - Gatundu Rd Junction

I dont think I've done a post on this overpass before and thats why I couldn't pass it this time. The Kenyatta Road Overpass marks the T-Junction between our Thika Road and Gatundu Road near Juja. Currrently it is the second last overpass before you arrive in Thika.

As opposed to many overpasses, this one is actually straight from on-ramp to off-ramp something like the Kahawa Sukari overpass. By the way, SinoHydro has opened the service roads for Kahawa Sukari on both sides, the place looks impressive.(The only overpass not surrounded by dusty roads). Back to Kenyatta Road Overpass, the top section has no tarmac just like other structures something that I still don't understand.What do you think? - Why are they not laying tarmac on the top section of most overpasses??

As you read this, Sheng Li has already laid bitumen on both ramps and may open it next week. Have a look...

Thika Road - Bypass Interchange

Its been long since I wrote about Lot 3 construction. Just a few meters from Ruiru, is the meeting point of Thika Road with the Bypass project. Both of these road projects carry large volume of traffic.

I'd like to make a clarification: The road that goes below Thika Road is the Eastern Bypass and not the Northern Bypass.

Currently the contractor if finishing up with the climbing and descending ramps on both sides and additional civil works on the top. This section has taken a long time due to the fact that its being handled by two contractors of different projects.

SinoHydro and the Guard Rails

Location: Ruaraka

For over a month now, the contractor for LOT 2 (SinoHydro Corp.)has embarked on an ambitious plan to install Highway Guard Rails from the Ruaraka Underpass till Roysambu Overpass.

These structure are supposed to prevent vehicles from crossing to the other set of lanes when struck. They're made of galvanized material (maybe steel) for utmost hardness. A loaded 2Tonne pick-up at a speed of 100kph is used to test the functionality of these guard rails. Most guard rails will stand the force of such a vehicle without bending of giving way. Something to note is that the termination of these guard rails should form a ramp which goes all the way to the ground but should not allow a vehicle to roll-over when struck. These type of highway structures have been used to the capital, Nairobi but their durability has been put to test by our motorists who used to knock them down once in a while.

SinoHydro has installed these structures from Ruaraka Underpass till near Roysambu. Doing such work when excited Kenyan drivers are speeding past them is risky but...work has to be done.

Safety Concern

Since the contractor installed the guard rails, residents of Ngumba Estate who used to cross at the Baptist Missions' entrance gate, have been inconvenienced. Things are thick because they are still crossing despite the guard rails being there. It is shocking to watch as a pedestrian would skillfully dash across the first 4 lanes but on reaching at the guard rail, they would have a problem of jumping over. By this time vehicles are already approaching. To make things worse, the same pedestrian would jump the nest line of guard rails and bam! they're on the danger zone again. One has to balance on the small kerb holding the guard rail tightly and eyes on the road waiting for traffic to clear. What about children????

Upon a close check, SinoHydro has carefully left a section near the entry to the underpass without guard rails for pedestrians to cross. Also bumps and zebra-crossings have been added but people still insist of the dangerous way. PLEASE DO NOT CROSS AT THE GUARD RAILS-BE SAFE....DON'T TEST FATE

Allsops Underpass

When heading to town, you cannot miss to see the new kid on the block. The strategic location of the Allsops Underpass is significant given the slow moving traffic snarl-up as you rise the gentle slope from the Ruaraka Underpass, a stone throw away.

Drivers and passengers alike can be seen casting a curious eye down the underpass from the current road in use which runs along side this structure. The Allsops Underpass can be called a sister to the Ruaraka Underpass since they resemble each other in some parts. Lets look at these similarities & differences:

One of the notable similarities of Allsops Underpass to Ruaraka Underpass is the motorway bridge structure and architecture.Both have two columns parrarel to each other to support the bridge.
Both of the underpasses support the same number of vehicles up and below.

Differences

Ruaraka Underpas is more extensive in length while the Allsops Underpass appears to be smaller in the overall length.
While the Allsops Underpass has slanting natural rock walls, the Ruaraka Underpass has concrete walls as the soil retention method.

The Underpass is not going to be ready soon, so lets be a little more patient. Bitumen has still not been laid and the contractor is busy up on the bridge completing works there. Good structure SinoHydro, keep up.

The Museum Hill Interchange

I wont beat abound the bush or pour many words into this because it speaks much for itself. The creme De la creme of Lot 1 is finally complete.If you've been saving your new car for this highway, then its time you started the engine. Chances are that you will not switch it off again.:-)

As you approach the interchange from The National Museum way, a flurry of confusion greets you occasioned by continuous car horn now and then. I must say that at this point you dream of owning a car. Drivers cant contain the joy of driving on such smooth highways.

When standing by the road, you can glance yonder and see for yourself the nice curve of concrete and cars that seem to enjoy every centimeter of it. There are reports that drivers are forgetting they are in Kenya for a moment, this is normal but do keep your eyes on the road please. Use this Manual For Driving.

China Wu Yi has made another step of marking the highway maybe due to complaints from readers here. Huge arrow markings at the entrance and exit of the interchange. The contractor has also places reflective RED YELLOW and WHITE stickers along the entire wall. Impressive.

Museum Hill Interchange opened to traffic

In what seems to be a rush against time, China Wu Yi seems to have taken the lead once again. Yesterday evening saw the colorful ceremony of the opening of The Museum Hill Interchange. This was accompanied by nice colorful flags on the interchange as drivers used the road. The officials then waved as drivers passed by them. This marks a great stride in the contractors progress. The February deadline is now achievable.

This time I wont say welcome because practically, if you are reading this you are definitely welcome to see what Kenya has to offer. The long overdue solution to the nasty Museum Hill,Waiyaki Way and Uhuru Highway traffic snarl up is here.This circular interchange will, without doubt solve what many drivers have described, a pity situation. One of the cool things about this interchange is the rewarding spectacular view of UoN (University of Nairobi) lash green fields that every driver shall be entitled as they use it.

So how does the interchange work?
The interchange will be able to handle traffic from all 3 directions without the need for any motorists to stop. This is how it shall work...

Vehicles from the city via Uhuru Highway to Museum Hill, would normally use the roundabout then rise up to Museum Hill.This is how things are now. Once complete, these vehicles will proceed straight below the overpass(keeping left) then turn-off into the circular interchange which will rise and cut back to Museum Hill.
Vehicles from Museum Hill to the city will keep left and go down the yet to be constructed ramp alongside the overpass, join Uhuru Highway and straight into town.
Vehicles from Westlands, Nakuru,Naivasha to town will simply keep to the same lane and straight into town, however those wishing to go to Museum Hill will use the side road just before the overpass into Museum Hill.

Approximately 2km from the Roysambu Overpass is the all to famous Ruaraka Underpass. It has made headlines here at the Thika Road Blog for being the way it is, spectacular. Its been quite some time since I visited this area, so let me list down the major developments that have taken place.

The road for traffic en route to Thika has been opened and its now fully functional
The underpass is now nearing completion.
Traffic barriers are being mounted to prevent cars rolling down into the road below from the escarpments above.
The connection to the Allsops Underpass is almost done, with the underpass quickly opening soon.

The Roysambu Overpass stands where the Roysambu roundabout used to be. For those who can remember, inside the roundabout used to be nothing: was used as a place for crusade. Much has changed since the construction primarily to construct an overpass for traffic heading to Thika and back without any much interruptions.

This has been done, in fact as you read this both roads have been opened to traffic.

Traffic to and fro Kasarani will have to go under while having an option to join the highway at the ends of the descending ramps for both directions.

Welcome to the massive circular traffic interchange built by China Wu Yi. The scenery inside the what is now an large circular open space is breathtaking. The previous roundabout partly done away with, can only cast an envious eye at what seems to be the long awaited solution to the traffic snarl up that was once here.

Thus section handles traffic from 3 different destinations namely:

City Centre via Uhuru Highway
Nakuru, Naivasha, Westlands and adj. areas via Waiyaki Way
Museum Hill, Parklands etc via Museum Hill Road.

Before the onset of the construction this area was a nightmare for motorists because Waiyaki Way and Uhuru Highway carry large volumes of traffic. Every driver for himself was the situation here long before traffic police were put. Traffic lights gave up a long time ago.

The Reality

Poor road condition hence reduction of traffic speed = traffic jam
Road-sharing- Vehicles on Uhuru Highway enroute to Museum Hill caught up in the same traffic jam as those enroute to Westlands.
Large volume of cars which the roads were not designed to carry.
Roundabout, major cause of traffic jam

The Solution

Eliminate the roundabout and in its place put a non-stopping traffic interchange.
No road-sharing, vehicles for one route use the same road.
Widen roads leading to City Centre
Lay high quality road.
Put mechanisms to handle the large volume of vehicles entering the city.

So how does the interchange work?

Globe Cinema Complex (Former Roundabout)

Globe Cinema Roundabout is probably the worst place you would want to find yourself whether in a matatu or in a private car, during the Nairobi rush hours(famous). The jam here is a headache and not to forget a heaven for pick pockets who wont spare you. Vehicle indicator lights have been stolen here in the past.

Once complete, drivers are going to experience a driving thrill like no other. PICTURE THIS: Going to work jam free, that is what Thika Road will assure you come next year.

This picture shows how the area under the fly-overs shall be utilized. A professional landscaper will be sub-contracted [a local one hopefully, am sure by then our contractors shall be equally as good] to turn the area into a Green Park for leisure (Uhuru Park 2) The river will have to be cleaned first for all this to commence.

Globe Cinema Roundabout is sealed off for road construction
Most vehicles will turn off into Grogon Garage and enter city centre via that route.
The Main highway that feeds this roundabout - Murang'a Road is beyond carrying capacity and in deplorable state-pity...
Globe Cinema Roundabout serves the city with 3 entries namely: Via Tom Mboya Street and Slip Road.

In Future (after completion).....

Globe Cinema ~~Roundabout~~ will be called Globe Cinema Complex
All vehicles to Tom Mboya Street (Tom Mboya Entry) will use the fly over which will end just before Koja Roundabout.
All vehicles to Slip Road (Moi Avenue/University Way,UoN etc) will use .........awaiting clarification.
No stopping for any reason unless its an emergency or accident. Doing so will result in a fine.
There will be O to None traffic jams.

The Kimbo Overpass is Open to traffic

The cold smell of freshly laid bitumen is what greets your nostrils as you rise the gently curved climbing ramp of The Kimbo Overpass. For those new to this structure, read my introductory post here.

Located within Lot 3, it is one of the most beautiful structure by the contractor. The marvell of the structure is how the contractor has pulled a smoothy curve as he tried to maintain the course of the road. A view from the top is breath taking.

It was opened probably on Sunday morining but its the direction heaing to town that can use the overpass. Once fully complete, traffic en-route to Thika wont have to stop as it was before.

The overpass can accommodate 6 lanes of traffic (to and fro). The section below the underpass can take in 4-lanes (to and fro).

This may seem nothing to top ranking sites and blogs which make this in a month but we at the Thika Road Blog consider this a milestone to future statistics.

Since the creation of this blog, such page-views was only a dream that seemed so far, yet as you read we've probably passed the 100,000 mark. For those who may not understand the cause of celebration, page-views indicate the number of times a website/blog has been viewed. A good example is Facebook which made 22,000 page-views in 2hrs!!.How about that?

SinoHydro's Ruaraka Underpass

The Ruaraka Underpass stands to show how far the Chinese contractors can go to prove that they are here to stay. This structure is expected to ease the flow of traffic in this area (Ruaraka).

The underpass will accommodate 6 lanes of traffic under and 4 lanes above. The flow of traffic under and above the structure is pretty simple as compared to Museum Hill - Uhuru Highway Complex.
This is how it shall be when completed.

Vehicles from Thika to City Centre will keep right (still keep-left--Highway Code) and go under the underpass and proceed to the Allsops Underpass.
Vehicles from Thika to Ruaraka and adjacent areas will keep left on approaching the underpass. The service roads along the underpass will link to the bridge.
Vehicles from City Centre to Thika will do as above and proceed to the underpass all the way to Roysambu Overpass.
Vehicles from City Centre to Ruaraka will keep left climbing the service road to the bridge.

Museum Hill - Uhuru Highway Complex

This structure is located on Waiyaki Way, the exit of city center to Naivasha and Nakuru. This is the meeting point of traffic from city centre and Museum Hill (to and fro). Traffic from Nakuru and Naivasha pours into this same place. This results to a traffic mess during rush hours especially when there are no traffic police. It is because of this and more reasons that a permanent solution has to be reached.

The roundabout was to be removed completely and in its place a complex circular traffic interchange. This was mainly to make sure that traffic was not to stop at any moment. This is how:

Vehicles from the City Centre to Museum Hill shall keep left, gradually climbing the huge circular flyover which will make a circle back to Museum Hill.
Vehicles from the City Centre to Waiyaki Way (Uthiru, Naivasha, Nakuru) will keep right and proceed to Waiyaki Way.
Vehicles from Waiyaki Way to Museum Hill will keep left climbing the ramp just before the complex to Museum Hill.
Vehicles from Museum Hill to City Centre will keep left going down the ramp provided to Uhuru Highway.
Vehicles from Museum Hill to Waiyaki Way will keep right and take the outer circle road which gradually descend to Waiyaki Way.

The Scramble for Thika Road

The construction of Thika Road at Githurai is probably the hardest in terms of public control. Recently the contractor for this section (Lot 2 - SinoHydro Co) has built new structures to the railway bridge. Apparently this move meant doing away with the existing structure which extends to the road.

Very eager youths who watched the developments were given a chance to dispose off this debri. This "Mine Area" which was to see them knock the rock-hard concrete till they can get the much treasured steel metal, soon turned chaotic after it turned out that there was not enough for everyone. Things got thick until Administration Police had to be called it to restore order.

Surprisingly, how much value is the steel cast into the hard concrete that one would knock that with a metal hammer till dusk?? Some one tell me.... here have a look.

Ruiru Railway Bridge

Thika Road crosses the Ruiru Railway just a few meters after Ruiru town (from Nairobi). This meeting point was facilitated by a tunnel where Thika Road would go over and the railroad under. When the expansion of Thika Road started, this meeting point had to be done all over again. This was primarily because the old structure could not handle the wide road and volume of cars. Currently, the contractors has dug a deep excavation and erected a mordern bridge.

This one should handle the vibrations of the train passing and at the same time provide a safe bridge for vehicles.The excavations are so deep that should a car go down there it would be fatal. The contractor has put crash barriers for safety.

The February 2011 Deadline

When the Nairobi - Thika Highway Improvement Project kicked off in 2009, the contractors promised that they would be done by Early to July 2011. This looked achievable given the speed they started with. Down the lane the project started experiencing its early teething problems. The rains were first to come uninvited causing them to slow down. The July 2011 deadline looked to draw nearer by the day.

The Utility companies were to move their infrastructure to pave way for proper foundations of the the highway to be done. These included water, sewerage and power.Old water and sewerage pipes had to be replaced and re-routed. The power lines also had to conform to the road network. All these could not be done in a day so they delayed the project. The contractors then pushed the deadline to December 2011 adding that some sections would be open by then.

As we approach the July 2011 Deadline, the project has also been hit by another problem....Flactuating Fuel Prices. Apparently it also need another 5Billion to cover additional cost of fuel. No need to worry because they said this had been anticipated. Due to this the contractors have now said they will be done by February 2012. They confirmed that some more sections would be open.

Lets all be patient and hope that this time round they shall keep their word.

Thika Road Needs Ksh.5billion more

The Nairobi - Thika Highway Improvement Project is set to increase its initial cost by 5Billion Ksh due to the high cost of fuel.

According to the Ministry of Roads PS, Mr. Michael Kamau, the increase was as a result to the flactuating fuel prices given the fact that the project heavily relies of this fuel for their machinery. The highway is built mainly of bitumen and the heavy trucks drink diesel for operation. He noted that the money may increase by 10 to 15% and was quick to clarify that this increase was anticipated and has been catered for.

The PS continued to say that Thika Road would be complete by February 2012. This was due to a hitch in the construction at the time when they had to change contractors doing the sewerage and water works. Kamau said that Globe Cinema would be complete by August this year while Pangani to Muthaiga had posed a challenge due to the massive traffic flowing there.

It appears that the 31Billion project is increasing by cost and also time allocated to be complete.Lets hope Feb next year wont be pushed again.

Pangani - Muthaiga Section

It is said to be the hardest part of Lot 1. Many have predicted that some sort of a tunnel shall be constructed at Pangani. Well, the Pangani to Muthaiga will be an interesting project since up from the Pangani Roundabout which in itself is complex, one can only sit back and watch as both contractors meet here. Muthaiga is divided between Lot 1 and Lot 2 each in a different direction. From Pangani Roundabout It is anticipated that heavy traffic will be using this section because 3 highways will be meeting at the Pangani Roundabout.

This section from Pangani to Muthaiga will comprise of approx. 6-8 lanes on each direction with pedestrian paths etc. At Muthaiga an Underpass is being constructed....(thats for another post coming...)

Muthaiga - Utalii Road Section

Location: Muthaiga - Utalii Hotel, Nairobi.

This is the road section from Mathare Hospital all the way until Utalii Holel, situated on the banks of the massive depression. Before the onset of the Thika Road Improvement Project much of this area was undeveloped and all that was there to see was the cultivated farms just past Utalii. Lets not forget that this area was a blackspot given the sharp turn that was here before construction started.

Much has changed since the contractor moved in. The blackspot to start with, has been removed. The temporary road now takes a more practical approach to the slope thereby reducing accidents. The plans are to make the whole area a gentle slope or simply flat.This has been done complex lanscaping and filling the whole area with soil. When complete, a 10-lane highway will cut through. The 10 lanes will comprise of 8 Main and 2 Service roads. Currently the contractor is working of the bridge, given the fact that a river used to pass there originally.

Muthiga Roundabout is the start of the 10 or 8 lanes section that runs untill Kenyatta University. (Border of Nairobi and Central Province.)

Globe Cinema Complex is "Open" to traffic

The Globe Cinema Roundabout as we know it is set to change forever. Currently the roundabout is closed off as the contractor constructs columns which will be supporting the massive flyovers. Once complete, The will be a major interchange for traffic heading to the City Centre and up to University Way via the Slip road which has been widened. The area below this flyovers will be turned into some sort of a green park as the relevant authorities try to reclaim the land. This concept of land reclamation is raising eyebrows considering the noise generated by the immense traffic above. Anyway lets just wait and see.

Nairobi - Urban Toll Project - Cancelled

The Government of Kenya, through the Ministry of Roads has terminated the contract for the construction of the Nairobi Urban Toll Project. This has happened following what the World bank says as a lack of interest to finance it. The 67Billion Ksh project was to see the construction of a 77km paved road from Athi River to Kikuyu on Naivasha/Nakuru Highway

The project was cancelled after the Contractor, Starbag did not meet the conditions of the Financier, World Bank. Apparently, the contractor has protested over the termination citing operation costs it had incurred since the concession had been formed. Some of the conditions laid out by the World Bank was that Starbag was to comply with social and environmental impacts including land acquisition and legal provisions in Kenya. The World Bank also cited some "irregularities" in the project concessionaire and could not release the 67 Billion Ksh. This project was also met with bitter remarks by Kenyans since many new structures and businesses on Mombasa Rd were to come down.

Earlier this week the government issued a letter to the contractor saying it had cancelled the project but the contractor has urged the government to reconsider. Now what is left is for the government to bring on board new companies to form a new concessionaire or look for other funding sources which does not come with conditions

Witeithie - The rock is no more...

Since the last time I visited this humble town of Witeithie, the contractor has been tackling a huge rock that stood on the road path. With all the artillery of machines he could find, the contractor battled with this rock for a period of not less than 4 Months, and its not until recently that there was indeed light at the end of the tunnel. If you head out there, all you'll find is an excavator clearing rumble from what we can now call a battle ground. The area looks open as works now commence for the road.

Heading "Down" to Kiambu?

Its now official, the link to Kiambu Road from Thika Road, which is now by means of a roundabout, will be replaced by an underpass. Motorists wishing to access Kiambu Road will do so by an Underpass which will connect the 2 Roads. Info about the width of the road is still scanty but by the look of things the Underpass will solve the problem of traffic jam of this large roundabout.

As was the initial plan, all the roundabouts on Thika Road will be removed, and with no exception to this one. The link to Muthaiga is still in plan and no work has commenced.

The lash green grass of the UoN (University of Nairobi) fields compliment the beautiful structure that will solve the traffic jam known to all who pass by Museum Hill Roundabout daily. This very roundabout handles volumes of traffic from Westlands, Nakuru, Naivasha etc and at the same time traffic exiting city centre to similar direction.

In its place there shall be a huge circular traffic interchange to ensure that traffic will not stop but maintain a smooth flow in whatever direction.Currently the contractor has made tremendous effort and its finally taking shape.

Above the Ruaraka Underpass Bridge

No one along the entire Thika Road can afford to smile at such times when driving has now turned hectic and the roads are everyday changing route not mentioning the ever rising fuel prices. But amid all these problems, the residents of Ruaraka and Garden Estate can afford to smile as they walk on the newly built Ruaraka Motorway Bridge. Though its party complete, the contractor (SinoHydro) has kindly allowed pedestrians to cross.

The Thika Road Blog has kept a close eye on the developments on this section of Lot 2. Since the times of Dust_Dust_Dust and Dust we are pleased of the way the contractor has handled this work. Final touches are now being done and also making it possible for drivers to use the bridge. Much effort and time of the Contractor has been diverted to the Allsops Underpass.

Kimbo Overpass

The Kimbo Overpass is located in a rather silent and less developed place, not a place that one would think such a landmark would be built. The area is known as Kimbo, a few kilometers from Kenyatta University, Ruiru Campus. This overpass is the point where Thika Road has made an almost 80 degrees heading South (from Thika) or heading North East (from Nairobi). Check out Google Maps.

Sheng Li, the Contractor for this section of the road, has raised a structure that has emulated this geographical turn and he has done it spectacularly.The Kimbo overpass, although built in the same concept as the rest, stands out.

SinoHydro has done it yet again.Part of the Ruaraka Underpass is open to traffic.The tarmacked section is what many Kenyan car owners have been longing for for a long time. The open section is 2lanes for City Centre direction only, so if you are heading to Thika, you wont get to taste the smooth highway.

Allsops/GSU Roundabout Excavation

Probably the deepest excavation in the whole Thika Road Project, the underpass being constructed here has shocked everyone, including the ordinary mwananchi who couldn't help but stop to stare at this awesome gap.
The underpass will likely be like a similar one just a few meters from here, the Ruaraka Underpass.

Much of the earth has been dug out leaving a deep excavation.The Thika Road Blog would like to warn curious onlookers to take vey good care when getting a view. The contractor has made an initiative to pour soil/earth mounds arond the excavation, thats good.A fall down there could be fatal.

The underpass will start a few meters from the roundabout on the upper side (towards city center) and end at the slope on the river where a short distance road will link the two underpasses.This is part of the 8-lane high speed section from Muthaiga to Kenyatta University.

Museum Hill Roundabout Updates

The Museum Hill is a link between 2 major roads ie: Waiyaki Way and Museum Hill Road(Forest Road). For those who may not know where exactly it is, its the second last roundabout on your way to the city centre via Waiyaki Way located in Lot 1.Over time massive traffic snarl-ups have been noticed especially during rush hours. Its for this reasons and more that the designers of Thika Road had to have it removed!

In its place there shall be:

Construction of a flyover for cars that will be going to Museum Hill
A complex elevated circular traffic interchange at UoN Grounds.
Smooth flow of traffic from all directions.
Expansion of Waiyaki Way after the roundabout, which shall be elevated.

This flyover will be elevated above Waiyaki Way and go till the Museum Hill Overpass which is just a couple of meters ahead from here.Note that the complex elevated circular traffic interchange at University of Nairobi Grounds, is being built to the left of this image.All traffic from Waiyaki Way to city centre shall have an option of heading to Museum Hill by using the inner circle of going to city centre by using the outer circle circumference.

The bridge that can be seen in the distance shall be the exchange point for Museum Hill and City Centre bound traffic masses.This will ensure smooth flow of traffic.

The Museum Hill overpass was constructed to ease traffic flow for the two roads.More info about her can be found here.

Ruaraka Underpass Motorable Bridge

SinoHydro is in the process of laying the supporting structures for the motor-able bridge that will connect Ruaraka and Garden Estate. These two places were set apart soon after the deep excavation of this underpass started, some two years ago.The bridge will have 2 lanes on each side similar to the one at Juja.

Pedestrian walkway will also be included. However one of the major changes is the temporary bus-bay that was set up some time back. Once all is done traffic en-route to the City Center will be on the Ruaraka side while those from the City shall be on the Garden Est. side. Judging be how things are going, the entire traffic will be diverted to the other side for construction to commence on the side which is now bearing the traffic load.

The Ruiru Railway Bridge

Works at Pangani Roundabout

Once Forest Rd meets with A2 at the Flyovers, the two shall proceed at one (dual or trio) carriage way coming to Pangani Roundabout(wont be there anymore) where Forest Road shall dip into the Forest Road Underpass.It shall be carrying a large volume of traffic since Road A2 is an international road and also Forest Road shall be carrying traffic all the way from Waiyaki Way( Nakuru, Naivasha etc). At Pangani Roundabout the underpass will divert to the river valley towards Thika.Motorists not opting to go to Thika must not enter the underpass.
Motorists should exercise caution when driving along the underpass under construction, a fall down there can only be termed as lethal. Take care drivers.Good work China Wu Yi for placing barriers alongside the road.
The Pangani Roundabout currently handles traffic from 3 roads making it a very complex section for the contractor.

The Ruaraka Underpass

You have not been to Thika Road lately and not have seen the 200m(approx) long Ruaraka Underpass. Spanning a width if 30m wall-to-wall this section of the road makes SinoHydro stand out.During the excavation of this underpass, the residents of the area, complained about dust and ever changing road diversions as the contractor slowly curved out this immense structure, now no one is speaking, just smiling.:-)

The underpass shall accommodate 4 lanes(to and fro) and will be used by traffic on high speed. Motorists should note that once they enter the underpass, the next exit shall be at Githurai. This high speed section is for motorists that are going to Thika or wish not to stop regularly. A concrete motor bridge will cross over of which supports for it are ready.This bridge is to link up Ruaraka and Garden Est. that were separated by the underpass during construction.Lighting will be installed in the underpass for easy access.

This underpass will connect with the 8-lane section from Ruaraka till Roysambu Overpass. Therefore two lanes from each direction will move into the underpass while the rest 2 lanes will go onto the escarpments, for Ruaraka and Garden Est. Residents.

Will the contractor wash up the walls?, because they are not good looking.

The Roysambu Overpass

The Roysambu Roundabout as it was once called, served Thika Road and Kasarani Rd. users. Since the construction of the overpass started the roundabout was closed and fenced.A slow concept was used to construct this structure. For some time the contractor had stopped the construction process and concentrated elsewhere. Its only recent that the construction has resumed.

Currently the ramp facing City Center is being worked on after which they will move to the other side. One peculiar thing about this overpass is the ground clearance.It is impeccably low for a standard trailer to hatch under without causing a catastrophic situation. I don't know what the clever idea that is behind all this but, something innovative is cooking behind the mabati walls.

I wonder how the motorists from Kasarani will join the highway, anyone has an idea?

KCA/Survey Footbridge

Last week on 31st January, The KCA/Survey Footbridge was torn down in record time. This was done in the most professional way ever. After standing for almost 15years of service, it was time to give way to the expansion of Thika Road.What is left is just a lot of concrete rumble.One similar incident was also the KU Footbridge that suffered the same wrath of the contractor.More info about the footbridge can be found here.

Forest Road, A2 - Limuru Road Overpass

The Forest Road - Road A2 meeting point is a site to behold. Since the last time I visited the site, much of the flyover was undone but China Wu Yi has made tremendous progress. The roads looking new and fresh are still unusable since the road surface above is not there. However 50% of the work is done. To ferry the large horizontal concrete pillars, the Howo Truck is used.

Once complete, the traffic jam that exists in this area due to traffic of Limuru Road and Forest Rd, meeting shall be no more. One thing to note is that high trailers won't be able to use this road for fears of knocking low height flyover of the two roads.Forest Road shall be a dual or trio carriage way depending on the designs.Once the two roads meet, a ramp shall be constructed where now the road shall be called Forest Road, which will proceed to the underpass at Pangani.

The Pangani Roundabout will be a complex of many roads because it is fed by 3 roads of high volume traffic.Forest road will underpass till the Pangani river valley a few meters from the roundabout.Much of Thika Road traffic from Thika will go to a flyover then head to town.

The Kahawa Sukari Flyover is Open to Traffic

Nairobi residents woke up to the opening of the Kahawa Sukari Flyover today morning. This flyover is the first to be opened for use by traffic in the whole Thika Road Project.

SinoHydro, the contactor for the flyover and also the Lot2 Contractor, is the first one among the three to open such a section of the road. Road users have expressed their deep satisfaction upon the opening of the flyover citing major development in the road sector. With a capacity of 4 lanes (to and fro the city center), it is indeeed a marvel.The Kahawa Sukari Flyover is the last in the High Speed Section that starts in Muthaiga Roundabout till Kenyatta University.

The highway was opened early today morning at around 6am.

The Howo 336 was last spotted by the Big Truck Diaries crew along Forest - Museum Hill Rd (Lot1) transporting the massive horizontal supports that would make up the road over the pillars.One of those loads weights a lethal 20t. She boasts of a 336 hp Sinotruck Engine, 6 cylinder, 4 stroke, water cooled, turbo charged, direct injection engine under her hood. The maximum power is 336hp at 2200rpm with a specific fuel consumption at 198g/Kwh. The engine can deliver a max. torque of 1260nm at 1100-1600rpm.Beautiful!!

The sheer cost and size of this machine makes it the only one is the whole project, as for now. Only one has been spotted. China Wu Yi - The contractor for Lot1 should feel very proud of owning such a rig.

However, to successfully haul the large concrete structures, the Howo can't do it alone.An axle machine at the rear (which chooses to remain anonymous), helps to navigate the load during sharp turns with the aid of a small engine mounted on to it.When the Howo is in motion, the maximum speed she can manage maybe in the range of 5-10kph, anything above this, and the pillar will start to dangerously sway from side to side.
To catch a glimpse of the Howo, be sure to hang around Museum Hill when she comes out for her morning rounds.

The Hitachi ZX250H3 was among the first machines to be brought on site to start the Thika Road Project. This is fairly because the excavator performs the groundbreaking work long before the other machines come . She performs two tasks, one to dig through hard rocks and two, excavate the soil. This is facilitated by two attachments that can be attached to the arm if the machine.The massive power that comes with the machine can make a good short height crane in some applications

It is owned by virtually all contractors, each having about 5 units of such machines.This very unit was spotted at the Ruaraka Underpass during the initial stages of removing earth for the construction.Its very interesting to watch when being handled by a skilled operator but the annoying sound when up close is deafening.She boasts of a chain wheel base meaning that she can move on all terrains as opposed to the Sany800C Crane..It is good to note that a machine of this type, owned by a different owner, brought down the once famous Nakumatt Thikaroad.

Again a first of its own in the Thika Road Project, China Wu Yi possesses what some may call a mean machine. This specific crane has the ability to lift and take off ground a load of 80Tonnes comfortably. An up close and candid view reveals alot, she is a new truck. This machine must be very costly so how it came here... we don't know.One thing to note of this hydraulic crane is her shoes...or chain belt movement.Though this means that she can move virtually anywhere, she is however limited by her great weight,and sheer volume of her boom. The manufacturer states that she is not supposed to move on a tarmac road maybe because the chain may ruin the bitumen surface. The loads on the rear help her balance the load on the boom.

Since she is pretty much owned by China Wu Yi, you may come across her swinging loads brought to her by The Howo 336 along Museum Road next to the Museum Hill Roundabout. She has also been spotted working at the famous Forest Road - Limuru Road Flyovers since that area requires the loads to be placed on the pillars.

The Chinese Contractors: Sinohydro Co. have once again put Kahawa Sukari on the map. The Kahawa Sukari Flyover, which is nearly complete is a marvel. The structure spans a great length replacing the juction that was there initialy.With a 3lanes vehicle capacity it marks the end of the high speed section that starts in Muthaiga Roundabout.It is also the final structure of Lot 2 which terminates just after Kenyatta University.

Since I last visited this site major works have been undertaken.i.e

Laying of the first layer of bitumen
Construction of side barriers preventing vehicles from falling off.
Adjacent roads into and exiting the flyover.

A Wake-Up Call for Kenyan Contractors

The ongoing improvement works at Thika Road is indeed a wake up call to our very own Kenyan Contractors who have been labeled-Unreliable due to the very way they conduct their works on the ground. Just have a glance at the way Thika Road Contractors have carefully managed the project improving efficiency and reducing time wastage.

We must admit that yes, the Chinese Contractors have delayed the ongoing works on the highway but just as reported by the papers it was due to slow movement of Utility Companies.The Chinese Contractors have undertaken the works with all they have in their arsenal and every Kenyan using the road can bear witness that indeed the 21Billion Investment is worth it.

Many would agree that if this work could have been given to the Kenyan contractors, right now we would still be debating if Nakumatt should be demolished and other adjacent properties in the so called Road Reserve.Or somewhere along the way funds would have dried off then the whole project would come to a screeching halt. By the way do we have the machinery that I see being used by the Chinese?

The Chinese have showed that their have the capacity and zeal to work on any project and this can be seen on the on going works at Moi International Sports Center - Kasarani. They have been given the mandate to undertake The Nairobi Metro Study.

Ring Road Ngara - Lot 1

Ring Road is the road that connects Pangani Roundabout and goes till Muthurwa Market Roundabout.In some sections it is a dual carriage way as it goes through Ngara. This road falls within the Lot 1 section of the Project (China Wu Yi Co.)
The works that will be undertaken on this road shall be:

Construction of an underpass at the Pangani Roundabout.
Converting of Ring Road into a standard Dual Carriageway.
Provision of footpaths on the road.
Removing the roundabouts till Haille Sellasie Avenue.

Once complete traffic from Mombasa Road will be able to join Thika Highway without going to the CBD , although this is currently possible, the numerous roundabouts catalyze traffic jams making this route uneconomical.This should be called the Western Bypass.
Currently road works have progressed. The contractor has tarmacked a good section of this road although not yet into the town.Kudos to China Wu Yi having done so much despite the heavy traffic that uses this road especially during rush hours.

14 Seater Matatu to be removed

Happy new year to all my readers, Welcome to yet another promising year of construction.

Following the Government's decision not to license any new 14-Seater Matatus as of 1st January 2011, it is clear that a good number of these vehicles may not live to see the new Thika Road once complete come December 2011.This comes as there is need for a better transportation system within Nairobi and the rest of the country.So the question remains, after the removal of the 14 Seater vehicles, whats next?

Apparently the Government wants to introduce the 35+ seater vehicles whereby the previous owners of the 14 Seater can form Sacco's to help them purchase these vehicles.With the current construction of Thika Road it is evident that the plan to remove these vehicles was had been seen during planning of the highway.It would be also uneconomical to keep operating given the reduced carrying capacity and fuel consumption.

With less than 12 Months left on the construction calendar, given the fast rate at which an ordinary matatu on the road, those that shall see the fully constructed Thika Road, shall be the lucky few.

Globe Cinema Roundabout.....CLOSED!!

Considering the amount of work done since the actual closure, I admit that this post is late, however better late than never.The Globe Cinema Roundabout played a very crucial role since it was a major entrance to the city and was served by Muranga Road. It also was an exit from the city centre via a slip road.This roundabout has been streched well beyond its carrying capacity in terms of vehicles leading to its demolition. Not to forget, Globe Cinema Roundabout had a very famous matatu terminus in the center. Matatus route 44,45,145 etc would be seen here scrambling for passengers. The Nairobi City Council has maintained this roundabout over time but now it has to go.For Pedestrians the roundabout has these tunnels which cut through beneath the roads and came out on the other side to minimize accidents. However the foot tunnels were not the best place to pass during late hours and rainy days.

The proposed work on the roundabout will be first to do away with the whole roundabout concept and introduce flyovers and overpasses. Muranga Road will be widened to 6 lanes all the way from Pangani. Upon arriving at Globe Cinema Roundabout a section of it will fly-over to Tom Mboya St. toward Koja Bus Stage.The rest will join the slip road providing another entrance to the city center via Moi Avenue, and also a diversion to Waiyaki Way. All these shall have a return in the opposite direction. The area below will be turned into some sort of a park since all the business shall be above. Support pillars for the flyovers will stand on the roundabout.This section of the project lies within Lot 1 - China Wu Yi Co. Ltd (Contractor)

With all said but nothing done lets all wait and monitor the Chinese contractors remodel our transport system for a better tomorrow.A render of this section once complete will be posted soon on this blog.

Limuru Rd. - Forest Rd. Flyover wins the vote.

The votes are in, and after tally, The Limuru Road - Forest Road Flyover (Overpass) got the most votes. Judging from the beauty of the structure its indeed the best looking.
This structure lies within Lot 1 work being undertaken be China Wu Yi Co. Ltd.

Thika Road has had its fair share of accidents over time but its upto us to reduce these numbers. Its during this festive season that most shocking accidents are reported. Simply by following the highway code, we can all be safe on the road.Avoid over-speeding and careless overtaking. To all passengers wear your safety belts at all time.Lets all live to see this Highway get completed.

Thika Road is currently under construction which translates to major diversion of traffic to pave way for improvements. Please exercise caution as you approach this areas so as to avoid falling into the deep excavations.

Lot 3 - The Facts

Lot 3 is the longest in terms of overall road length and it involves less construction of complex interchanges. As of now most of the overpasses that were to replace all roundabouts are complete so whats remaining is the road itself.The project is fully in Central Province starting at the border of Nairobi Province to Central Province and ending in Thika.

The Major works on this section include:
1. Widening the dual carriage way from KU to 6 lanes upto Juja.
2. Construction of a standard 4 lane road with paved shoulders from Juja till Thika.
3. Construction of a 6 lane overpass at the Bypass section and provision of service roads and footpaths.
4. Street Lighting and Junction improvements.
5. Storm drains.
6. Road Markings and Highway Signage.
7. Construction of 3 Railway Bridges.
8. Construction of Flyovers at places which had roundabouts.

Lot 2 - The Facts

Percentage Done: 43%

Lot 2 is basically a high speed section. Its design tell it all.This section will have upto 8 lanes and a minimum of 6 lanes for overpasses and flyovers.The road will have minimum exits and access to reduce interruption of traffic flow.Currently this section of the project is ahead of the rest in terms of completion.

The Major works on this section includes:

1.Widening of the main carriage way from 4 lanes to 8 lanes.
2.Construction of 7.25m wide service roads on either side of the road, which can be able to carry traffic in both directions.
3.Construction of a subway at Survey of Kenya.
4.Construction of an Underpass at former Nakumatt Thika Road site.
5.Construction of an Interchange at GSU Roundabout.
6.Construction of Underpass at Kahawa and KU

7.Construction of Flyovers at Githurai and Kasarani.
8.Construction of 2m wide footpaths on either side of the road.
9.Construction of 3m wide cycle tracks on either side of the road.

Lot 1 is by far the most complex because it involves major traffic diversion during construction and construction of a major interchange at Pangani.This part of the project is located in the city as compared to the other sections and therefore it poses a problem during construction due to high traffic density. 3 roads shall be meeting at Pangani Interchange then proceeding to Muthaiga ie:
Limuru Road
Murang'a Road
Kariokor Road
The road works and improvement in the city center will go up to Haille Selassie Avenue joining Uhuru Highway.Once road works begin on these sections, there shall be untold traffic jams.One can imagine the amount of traffic that uses Haille Selassie Avenue during rush hours!!

The meeting point of Limuru Road with Thika Road A2 has been transformed into something that has never been witnessed in Kenya.The plan is to allow Limuru Road to go under while Thika Road and Forest Road overpass Limuru Road.This will greasily reduce the roundabout that wasn't helping the traffic mess that is normally witnessed during rush hours.
The two set of roads is by far one of the most amazing structures to be built since the expansion project began.
Heavy traffic from Thika Road will join Forest Road and proceed all the way till Waiyaki Way.Am sure an exit to Limuru Road will be built for vehicles wanting to divert to Limuru Road.

Thika Road - Bypass Interchange (Northern and Eastern Bypasses)

Since my last visit to this section of the road construction a lot has changed. First, the concrete supports for Thika Road as it makes its way above the meeting point of the Northern and Eastern Bypasses.Secondly its open to curious Kenyans.
Apparently both of these two road will be carrying heavy traffic and a common overpass wouldn't be the best option. A Grid Separated Junction/Overpass is being constructed.A similar one will be seen at Museum Hill but on a very larger scale.The Northern and Eastern Bypass will meet below having exist and entrances on both sides forming a diamond shape.This shall facilitate traffic joining any of the 2 highways without interrupting traffic flow at any point.

Waiyaki Way - Museum Hill Interchange

This is said to be the most complex part of the whole project. Once complete there is going to be one expansive motorway interchange for vehicle on Waiyaki Way, Forest Road and Uhuru Highway. This interchange is supposed to handlle a large number of traffic.Vehicles from Waiyaki Way will move into the city center without causing any delay since at no point will the traffic flow coming to a halt.

The area around this place will be a network of crisscrossing roads once the project is complete.

The provision of a pedestrian footpath maybe included though it is still early to tell.One thing for sure is that the Museum Hill Roundabout and the one at UoN/Uhuru Highway will be gone!
The construction shall basically be an interchange at UoN grounds and an overpass above Waiyaki Way.

Museum Hill Interchange

The overpass at Museum Hill is partly complete.The interchange built here will replace the roundabout that was here.Vehicles moving from Museum Hill to Forest Rd will go above while those moving from Globe to Ojijo Rd (to & fro) will go under.There shall be 4 interchanges to facilitate the interchange from the four roads for traffic which may want to change destinations

Update on Roysambu Overpass

Since the construction started on the overpass, its almost complete. The road that shall be going above the overpass together with the rising ramp is currently under construction.Much of the constrcution work is now visible as the fence shall be removed soon.Land reclamation just near the Roysambu Substation is taking place.

Witeithie

Witeithie is the last small town or settlement before arriving at Thika.This settlement lies on Lot 3 of the project.
Due to its location, not much work has been done and also the terrain of the area is a civil engineer's nightmare.
Witeithie is surrounded by huge cliffs of hard rock which has prooved quite hard to break as more space is required to the road.
This part of the project will witness a huge makeover since 6-lanes will be passing through here till Thika.A few structures have been raised as the contractors try to beat the July 2011 Deadline.

Updates for Ruaraka underpass bridge construction

Supports for the motor-able bridge link that will be connecting Garden Estate and Ruaraka,are nearly complete. This bridge will serve as a service road for vehicles coming from the above locations. It will probably be 2-lanes wide with footpath.Judging be the large supports, this bridge will be large and heavy.This construction comes after the successful construction of the deep underpass that will be a high speed traffic zone to Thika.The whole piece of structure is a replica of a similar old one in Juja (Lot 3)

Homeland to Roysambu Overpass Section

The road section from Homeland Hotel to Roysambu Roundabout is partially complete.The 8 lanes are complete except near the Safari Park junction.This is part of the high speed highway and is supposed to hold fast moving traffic with minimal exists.Also currently is a footbridge that is being constructed at Safari Park junction.A green stretch of grass can be seen trying to grow after the heavy construction that happened here.

The 8 lanes are to go till Kahawa Sukari where 6 are to continue henceforth.Just before this section is the Ruaraka Underpass where traffic will be going under a bridge currently being constructed.

Project Behind Schedule - Illustrated

The blame has been placed on the delayed transfer of water, electricity and communication lines from the road reserve.

“This is remarkable progress,” said Mr Aloysius Uche Ordu the bank’s vice-president, adding “this will facilitate the private sector to create jobs.”
Speaking after a tour of the project last week, Mr Uche said the project would change the lives of many Kenyans.“This is a transformational project. Kenyans will see where the loans that the government took have been pumped into,” he said.

He added that reducing the time people use while travelling gives room for them to be involved in productive work.Mr Uche also urged the government to speed up payments for contractors working on the super highway.The Sh26 billion project has been funded jointly by the government, the African Development Bank and the Chinese government.

The project has been divided into three sections — Lot One starts from the Museum Hill roundabout to Muthaiga, Lot Two starts from Muthaiga to Kenyatta University, while Lot Three starts from Kenyatta University to the Blue Posts Hotel.

Transport minister Amos Kimunya said last week that drivers could be forced to undergo refresher courses to learn how to drive on the eight-lane super highway.

The Survey Footbridge...awaiting demolition

The Survey Footbridge has stood the test of time since its construction back in the 80's. This was an initiative by the then contractor to reduce accidents cased by people trying to cross Thika Road. The stretch from Allsops Roundabout till Utalii has no bumps and therefore vehicles normally move at a very high speed.This necessitated the construction of this footbridge.
The Past Happenings
Even after the construction of the footbridge, pedestrians could be seen trying to cross the busy highway right below it.Indeed you can take a cow to the river but you cannot make it drink.One of the major reasons for this was the long and tiresome flight of staircases one had to climb to get across to the other side.Secondly muggers thrived on the bridge who threatened pedestrians of throwing them over if you didn't give them something.Though the situation is long gone, the stairs are still there.
The Present
The bridge now lies in the hands of the SinoHydro Engineers who know the very date of its demolition.A day that is near.The Muthaiga - KU section has been designed to be an 8-lane superhighway and surely those 8-lanes cannot fit under the bridge, therefore it will have to come down. The expansion of the road in this lot has started before and after the bridge, meaning that a clever move is coming soon on how the bridge situation is going to be solved.

As we wait for the D-day, hope they will replace with a modern bridge(with less stairs:maybe escalators:-). In the mean time we can look at the following images.

Just before you arrive at Muthaiga Roundabout, you cant miss to see this structure. This apparently will hold the 8 High Speed Lanes that will come from Muthaiga until Kenyatta University.The area around here which is a valley, will be transformed into a smooth flow of fast moving cars to and fro.

Works at Museum Hill Area

The latest developments at the Museum Hill area, have resulted massive remodeling of the whole area to provide space for the construction of overpasses like the one above.Museum Hill will be a busy area once the road is complete since it shall be the meeting point of various roads ie Ngara Road, Forest Road and a link to Waiyaki Way.The National Museum was forces to put down its main entrance(which was newly built) for the construction to commence in this area.

Thika, still untouched....

Since the construction of Thika Road started last year, Thika town has held up its name as one of the cleanest towns in Kenya.As you appproach the town there is little or no sign that a major highway passing here is under major construction.Pictured above, the motoway bridge that is the main entrance to the town still remains intact. The area near the entrance is less populated so little activity is seen.

Thika town is an industrial hub, and is full of warehouses.Over the years Thika has experienced a rapid population growth since land rates are quite low as compared to Nairobi, which is considered "full". The launch of The Thika Road Improvement Project has led to businessmen rushing to establish their premises along this traffic corridor.

The Improvement of Thika Road at this point is still not clear though the initial plan shows the construction of a Grade Separated Junction. Once the road is complete, a massive growth of this town is expected.This part of the project is under Lot 3 - Sheng Li Construction Company
One thing to note that Thika is not the end of the project but a few kilometers past this point.

Welcome to Kahawa Sukari

The construction of Thika Road at Kahawa Sukari is something to behold. The Overpass being built here is expected to hold a 6 lane traffic drawing traffic all the way from Kasarani. The road section from Muthaiga - Kasarani shall be 8 Lanes-with limited access and exists, from Kasarani - KU (Kenyatta University) shall be 6 Lanes.This overpass at Kahawa Sukari shall as said earlier, dispose traffic all the way from Kasarani. This will be a large number of traffic, so am sure they have a way of offloading it without causing a traffic jam on an overpass!

At Kahawa, the service road at either side of the highway are connected by an underpass cutting right below the overpass. This is to a enable traffic from Kahawa to join the highway at subsequent entrances without hindering other traffic movement.

Once the overpass structure is complete am sure moving from Muthaiga to Kenyatta University will be a walk in the park. The demolition of The KU Footbridge still doesn't make sense though.

Just to note, the work on this section is being undertaken by SinoHydro Corporation Limited.

The Ruaraka Underpass

Residents living in Ruaraka have a reason to smile as the Mega-Underpass is nearing its final completion phase.The structure which involved massive excavation of earth, will serve as an motorway underpass for cars going to and fro Thika and need not stop at any point. Work on this section of the project has seen traffic being diverted from one side to the other and has resulted to untold traffic jams on the road.Road users and businesses have endured dust clogged air as the large amounts of earth were being moved. Currently traffic is moving on the sides so therefore during night hours it is a nightmare.

The Underpass is approx 10m deep so a plunge down this cliff is fatal. Work has been going on day and night as the contractors try to beat the deadline. The final completion of this structure will see vehicles moving to Garden Estate and Ruaraka (EABL) use the bridge that is currently being constructed.A footpath may be included. Public transport vehicles shall use the outer roads since they have to make frequent stops here and there.

Thika Road ready to meet with Eastern & Northern Bypasses

The Nairobi By-pass project which involves the construction of 3 By-passes around Nairobi will indeed touch our Thika road, further enhancing transportation flow outside the city.The project is expected to be complete by 2012 and includes construction of interchanges, flyovers, box culverts, and standard pipe culverts.China has appointed China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) as the contractor. The project, which costs Ksh 8.6 Billion will incorporate the construction of:
The Northern Bypass
The 31-km bypass starts from Ruaka trading centre along Limuru Road, overpasses Banana Road through Runda and Thome estates. It then proceeds to Kahawa West and eventually to Ruiru, through Kamae, where it joins the Eastern bypass.Once complete, the Northern bypass will be wide enough to accommodate two heavy commercial vehicles going opposite directions.

The Eastern Bypass
The 39-km bypass starts on the Ruiru-Kiambu road. It crosses the Northern bypass and the Ruiru railway line into Thika road. After crossing Thika Road, it crosses Kamiti, Gathara-ini and Nairobi rivers into Ruai. The corridor then crosses Kangundo Road and proceeds to Mombasa Road via Embakasi Garrison and the North Airport Road.

The Southern Bypass
The Southern by-pass which runs along the Nairobi National Park fence across Langata Road into Kikuyu township to join the Nairobi-Nakuru highway at Rironi is meant to divert traffic from the city centre and help reduce heavy congestion that is now estimated to cost 50 million shillings a day in lost man-hours and fuel.This project is yet to kick-off since the world bank doubted the integrity of the company which won the tender, Nairobi Motorway Group

The Meeting Point
The Eastern By-pass and Thika Road are expected to "shake hands" just before Ruiru. The meeting of these two roads shall be a point of high traffic movement since Thika shall be completed and will be carrying vehicles with an 8 lane traffic. To reduce any congestion the construction of an overpass will be an excellent idea.This means that Thika Road will rise with the overpass allowing the bypass to run below it with exits in both.

This image which is drawn from the Appraisal Report shows that even the road bridge at Ruiru just after the bypasses will have to be rebuilt.

Waiyaki Way Narrowed to Single Lane Road

Today morning, the 3 lanes of either side of Waiyaki Way near the Museum hill roundabout will be narrowed to one lane on each side to allow the construction of pillars for supporting the flyover. The closure part of the road is expected to cause heavy traffic flow but according to the Nairobi Deputy Traffic Commandant, Leonard Katana, there is no need for alarm, as extra police will be deployed in the city to control vehicle flow to and fro the city.

Vehicles from Nakuru
He said to avoid congestion, personal cars from Nakuru should avoid Waiyaki Way by branching off to James Gichuru Rd. near ABC place, to Mzima Springs, Aboretum and State House Rd to the CBD. Some can branch off to Lower Kabete Rd. then to Sarit Centre, Parklands, Kipande Road and then get to the CBD.

Vehicles from Mombasa Road
Those coming from Mombasa Road and have no business in the CBD should branch off through South C the Mbagathi Way to Argwing Kodhek to James Gichuru and continue with their journey.

Vehicles exiting CBD via University Way
Those exiting CBD via University Way should turn left at Uhuru Highway roundabout, then join State House Rd. to James Gichuru to Waiyaki Way again.

Vehicles on Chiromo Road to CBD
Those already on Chiromo Road, heading to town should turn right through the Slip Road to Riverside Drive, to aboretum where they will connect to State House to access town.

Safari Park Hotel entrance to be closed

Notice is hereby given that drivers using the Safari Park Hotel entrance will as of tomorrow turn off at Homeland Inn Hotel just before you join the tarmacked highway.
Actually construction is already underway at the said point and am smelling a huge jam coming in the future. The residents using this route will now be using a dusty narrow road yet to be completed.
Drivers should exercise caution as the ongoing works may distract the flow of traffic around this area.

Museum Hill Roundabout Works

Works on Museum Hill Area is underway in a bid to enable connection of Westlands to Thika Road without entry to the CBD.

The scope of woks shall involve the connection of Forest road to museum hill road the to Waiyaki Way. For this to happed smoothly some distractions of the flow of traffic will take place just as the sign says.

Vehicles intending to go to Westlands should use Waiyaki Way via Uhuru Highway Roundabout or other alternative routes.

During this peropd of construction and diversions everywhere, drivers are urged to exercise caution and drive slowly since deep excavations are being undertaken.
